Have you ever gone through a season of waiting? Whether it has been days, months or yes sometimes even years, however long the season the waiting can be challenging at times.
In my own life I have had different seasons of waiting all which seem to circle around one common theme; Motherhood. In those seasons of infertility, going through the adoption process and yes even in the waiting period of being reunited with two of my children I choose to trust in God. It’s easier to say that today knowing that my HOPE is in CHRIST and CHRIST alone.
In Genesis 16 the Bible talks about a woman named Sarah. God told her husband Abraham that his offspring would grow as numerous as the sands of the seashore and the stars in the sky. There were only two problems. Sarah was barren and past the age of childbearing. As Sarah was getting up in age she doubted God. She did not believe that He would fulfill His promise to give her and Abraham a child.
Sarah decided to take things into her own hands and solve the problem herself. After waiting more than a decade for a child she felt she had waited long enough. Sarah unwisely attempted to fulfill God’s will her way through an Egyptian servant named Hagar.
Hagar did become pregnant by Abraham and they bore a son name Ishmael. Sarah despised them both and when Ishmael was a young boy they were sent away.
Sarah had three issues. Impatience, control and lack of trust in God. Sarah desperately wanted to make things happen on her timetable. She was depending on her strength and not God’s. I know I have been there and it is in those moments where I feel that deep heartache of the disappointment of things not going how I thought they would, I run to God.
Sarah doubted God because she looked at her circumstance and not at God who keeps all His promises in His timing. While Sarah was in her tent an Angel of the Lord was speaking to Abraham announcing that Sarah was going to get pregnant. Sarah laughed quietly because of her unbelief. God noticed Sarah’s laugh and He had the last laugh because within one year Sarah gave birth to Isaac.
When you are walking through the season of waiting, trust in Gods timing and in His ways. We can learn so much from Sarah. One thing is for sure, We serve a God that keeps every promise!
